Roman: Provincial

Roman Provincial coins were issued in areas that Rome conquered but after the establishment of the Roman Empire but did not adopt the roman currency system fully. They are a continuation of the original currency system that existed prior to the arrival of the Romans.

Alloys

A majority of these coins were bronze and brass coins, but a few were issued in silver, as the issue of silver was controlled by rome, and the monopoly of silver denarius coins was used to control and influence events in the area of provincial coin issue. The coins issued were likely used only in the east and immediate regions around. At first they were issued as a continuation of the original currency of the area under Roman rule, but under certain circumstances (like a new town, favour with the empiror etc) new permission was given to mint base coins.

Mints

The minters could be cities like Corinth or Antioch or regions like Egypt or Moesia to name a few. During Trajans reign, Antioch was the main issue of silver Drachms and Tetradrachms, these were also issued in Billon as well. Because the coin has the name of the town or are found in a certain area with little of the issue in other places, it is fairly certain we know where and because of the portrait, during what reighn of an emperor an individual coin was issued.

Denominations

Bronze and brass coinage was of an unknown denomination, but some could have been Greek Obolus and Chalkor while others were properly denominated in Roman as (coin) and sestertius usually written in Greek or Latin, depending of the area of issue. But we dont know the names of the coins for sure. They most likely were only circulated at a local level as there trade value was very small, but by comparrison of the wear and condition or these coins have a theory that they circulated for a long time. Silver coins had the value of Drechmae and Tetradrachms.
